Create an Account

Follow these steps to create your Academica account and start organizing your assignments.

Sign Up Options#

You can create an account using:

  • Google Sign-In (recommended - fastest and most reliable)
  • Email and password (fallback option)

This is the primary way to create an account and the method we recommend for all users.

In the Chrome Extension (Preferred)#

  1. Click the Academica icon in your browser toolbar
  2. Click "Sign in with Google"
  3. Select your Google account
  4. You're in! Your account is created automatically

Important: Use the same Google account in both the extension and the web app. This ensures seamless authentication across both.

In the Web App#

  1. Go to academic-optimizer-app.vercel.app
  2. Click "Sign Up"
  3. Click "Continue with Google"
  4. Select your Google account
  5. Review and accept the permissions
  6. You're in! Your account is created automatically

Tip: If you use Google for school, sign in with your school Google account. This keeps everything in one place.


Option 2: Sign Up with Email (Fallback)#

If you cannot use Google Sign-In, you can create an account with email and password instead.

  1. Go to academic-optimizer-app.vercel.app
  2. Click "Sign Up"
  3. Click "Sign up with email"
  4. Enter your email address
  5. Create a strong password (at least 8 characters)
  6. Click "Create Account"
  7. Check your email for a verification link
  8. Click the link to verify your account
  9. Return to the app and sign in

Note: The verification email may take a few minutes. Check your spam folder if you don't see it.

Important: If you sign up with email, use the same email and password when signing into the Chrome extension. Google Sign-In avoids this hassle entirely.


Complete Your Profile#

After signing up, you'll be asked to complete your profile:

  1. Display Name - How you want to be identified in the app
  2. Grade Level - Your current grade (helps with planning features)
  3. School (optional) - Your school name

You can always update these later in Settings.


Account Security#

Your account is protected by:

  • Google's secure OAuth 2.0 authentication (for Google sign-in)
  • Secure password hashing (for email accounts)
  • Session tokens that expire after inactivity
  • Email verification for password resets

Next Steps#

Now that your account is created:

  1. Install the Chrome Extension to sync your Canvas data
  2. Explore the web app

Troubleshooting#

I can't sign in with Google#

  • Make sure pop-ups are enabled for the site
  • Try clearing your browser cache
  • Try using an incognito window
  • Check that you're selecting the correct Google account

I signed up with different methods in the extension and web app#

  • Always use the same Google account in both places
  • If you used email in one and Google in the other, sign out and use the same method everywhere

I didn't receive the verification email (email sign-up only)#

  • Check your spam/junk folder
  • Make sure you entered the correct email
  • Try signing up again with the same email
  • The system will resend the verification

I forgot my password (email sign-up only)#

  1. Go to the sign-in page
  2. Click "Forgot Password"
  3. Enter your email address
  4. Check your email for a reset link
  5. Create a new password
